The Lippencott Mine road is of much lower elevation, gets less snow. It is a 4wd drive road, and takes longer to get back to civilization, especially if you are coming from the Inyo Mountain side. You can even try Steele Pass which is lower, but the summer rains hammered the trail.

I would chain up and try it. But remember, going in, especially from the south is downhill, and could be tricky coming back up.
