If you're on a budget, stay at one of the many hotels in Beatty. Most are around $40 for a single. Reservations probably aren't needed but it would help you secure a room, which you may not want to have to worry about after a long day of hiking. There are several well-traveled hiking areas such as Golden Canyon and Mosaic Canyon. Hiking around the dunes is fun and safe so long as you give yourself plenty of time to hike back before it starts to get dark. It is possible for some people, especially those new to the park, to get disoriented out there and start walking back out in the wrong direction. I find the hikes up the mountains out of the main valley the easiet to negotiate because you are basically going uphill and away from the valley on your way up and you just retrace your steps downhill on the way back. However, a German man got lost in Golden Canyon a couple of years ago and died of overexposure. That was in the summer, though, when temperatures were over 120. You'll need to be prepared for cold conditions when you go.
