Maybe, that would have been three times as hard and in Manly's journals he mentions visiting the same place going and returning.
I find it amazing that they WALKED out of the Valley not knowing where they were going, just looking for water and a way. How many wrong turns do you think they made, how many box canyons they had to retreat from.
