Question about Surprise Canyon

What's the big deal with all the issues surrounding plants, ferns, lizards, and mammals in Surprise Canyon? Didn't the 1000 plus residents of Panamint City, yahoo four wheelers, and 1000's of cars which drove up Surprise Canyon for 100 years destroy and kill everything up there already? What about those darn backpackers who "leave their footprints" all over the plants? Not to mention those dang backpackers who are always throwing trash everywhere? If the "evil" car and miner hasn't killed all this stuff off already, then, why would it happen now, all of a sudden, when fewer people were up there than any time in the last 100 years?!
