I like to think it was because I was a good rider, but it had alot more to do with "who you know, than what you know" :-)
Riding bikes around So. Cal back in the 70's I met up with a guy, his girlfriend worked at Honda and they hooked me up with the people at HRA (Honda Research of America) I got the job.
It was to cool, I rode most all the street bikes that Honda made and makes they competed with. I got to tour most of the west, with some fun guys. Me being a bike ride since the age of 8, and being from a family of bike riders, this was a dream job. I'm still getting milage out of those stories. :-)
