Lowering the tire pressures in all of your tires to around 15 and 20 pounds when attempting to climb steep, rocky terrain or driving on sand will give your tires a better grip and will make them wider where they contact the ground.  Don't under inflate them as this could cause your tires to separate from the rim. Also, don't forget to bring a portable tire pump to reinflate your tires before you travel paved roads again. Also, everything you read here and all suggestions are no substitute for experience. If you are a beginner I would suggest that you pick up a book such as the one Cecile mentioned (Shifting into 4wd). Even better take a class or travel with someone who knows what they are doing and learn from them. Most of all have fun and be safe...
