Look at any map of California, a little south of the middle "corner" of Nevada, and there it is. It is not in a city. Look in the Park Service website, http://www.nps.gov/deva, and you can find out quite a lot.
Most libraries also have books on Death Valley itself and the surrounding desert areas.
