The name Death Valley first appeared in the Los Angeles Star on March 16, 1861. This is two days earlier than previously reported. Manly was in Los Angeles staying in the same hotel as some of the members of the California Boundary Survey party. They learned the name from manly, we deduce.

If the railroad map predates the above, then it should be credited as a “first.” I would like to know the source of the map as we are working on a book covering the mapping of Death Valley. Thanks for the lead. LeRoy
