The road may be passable, but it is closed by the Park Service. There is presently no legal vehicle route from Butte Valley up to Middle Park.
I have noticed a beckoning (and fairly easy) route from the saddle above South Park down into Butte Valley, but have never had the nerve to descend, even on my motorcycle. I would assume that the park rangers would look dimly upon off-road driving within the park boundry.
