As reported, a good friend of mine did indeed 'miss the turn' and drive down from Roger's Pass into Striped Butte valley. Granted, he was unfamiliar with the area, alone with his girlfriend, and in the fog at night. After getting halfway down into Striped Butte valley, he high-centered his 4Runner on rocks and decided to hike out the way he came. Eventually, he reached Ballarat, where they radioed the rangers. To make a long story short, they got out ok and the 4Runner sat there for quite some time, until it was airlifted out of the Wilderness per the NPS. The bill was pretty hefty and my friend 'walked away' from the vehicle over it. Sad. Needless to say, he doesn't go camping often anymore. I have the pictures and video of it.
I wasn't aware of what was going on until the Sheriff called me.

I don't recommend that old route into Striped Butte Valley. It is definately off-limits to vehicles being that it is in the Wilderness and the trail is nearly non-existent.
Also, you can see the NPS takes a dim view of vehicles driving in Wilderness areas. That fact is driven home by the NPS not allowing my friend to drive out his vehicle and only allowing moving it by air.
