Do you know what route you are planning to take from LV to SF? The Sierra Nevada Mountains are between the two cities, and in the winter you'll either have to go around them to the south (towards Los Angeles) or north towards Reno, Nevada, and take Interstate 80 over the mountains. The southern route is generally open. The I-80 is often closed during and right after snowstorms.

Are you planning on driving that in one day? That is a LONG DAY of driving, taking either route! If you go towards Reno, Death Valley is less of a side trip than if you plan to go towards LA.

I'd probably recommend that you go to Death Valley from LV and allow some time for visiting. Then head over towards Lone Pine to see the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Mtns (which can be spectacular in winter) and find a motel. You might even consider starying at Panamint Springs Resort (the folks that host this board).

Then on the following day, head south to Mojave and take SR-58 over to Bakerfield. From there getting up to SF is easy.
