Memorial Day Weekend at the Racetrack

Hey y'all - I made the trip to Homestake Dry Camp (just south of the Racetrack) last weekend - and there was NOBODY out there. We were there Friday and Saturday. I was worried about my tires on the drive from Ubehebe to the Racetrack because I still have the stock Goodyears. I aired down to 25 psi and tried to stay clear of the sharp rocks. I took it slow - 2.5 hours one way (that was tough). Someone at Stovepipe Wells told us to drive early in the morning before the rocks and road get hot - he said that you are basically driving on "razor blades" when the ground is hot. Once we got to Homestake, it was already getting hot, but we were ready for the heat because we brought a huge umbrella. The problem was - all of our ice was pretty much melted by the end of the day. I decided to get a temperature reading at 5:00pm on Friday - and it read 102 degrees in the shade. Suffice to say the scenery was terrific as always, but we just weren't gonna get to do the hiking we wanted to, so we decided to head back to Stovepipe on Saturday.
Next time we go in April as we always have. November might be a good time too.
Racetrack Valley road was in terrific condition besides the usual washboards - and there were some hilarious teakettles at the junction.
