You won't need a 4x4 for your first trip to Death Valley. There is plenty to do and see from paved roads or well-maintained dirt roads. Here is a list of places you might consider visiting:

1. Furnace Creek Visitor's Center - pay entrance fee and get a map
2. Harmony Borax Works
3. Mustard Canyon
4. Twenty Mule Team Canyon
5. Artists Palette Drive
6. Zabriskie Point
7. Badwater (lowest point in the Western Hemisphere)
8. Dantes View
9. Stove Pipe Wells sand dunes
10. Mosaic Canyon
11. Ubehebe Crater
12. Scotty's Castle
13. Natural Bridge

As for places to stay, why not patronize Panamint Springs? They make this web page possible. Others choices are Stove Pipe Wells and Furnace Creek Ranch. The Inn is closed for the summer.

Good luck and enjoy!
