A few weeks ago I was watching the camp for some
friends of mine who were out playing around for
the day when the Campground host came over and asked me if I knew anything about first aid so I
got my stuff and went over to find a 8 year old boy who spent a couple of hours cooling off in a
spring fed pond. He has severe cramps but no temperature. I gave him a gatorade and in 20 minutes he was fine. This was not a hot day but at 6000 ft the sun was hot and the boy dehydrated
himself while in a 77 pond. The temperature was only 85 degrees with moderate humidity. I later
found out that he was drinking mountain dew which
has a fair amount of caffeine and he normally did
not drink such soda. It doesn't take too many small mistakes to make ones self sick in the desert even when the weather is moderate. I made
the boy drink a bunch of water and he was fine.
