Martin in England, I share your curiosity about the variations in temperature in the Furnace Creek area and I'm without answers. I believe less humid climates have greater local variations in temperature than the more humid locations. Many years ago, when I rode a motorcycle, at certain times of the day I could detect considerable change in temperture as I traveled along a road that was at a right angle to a series of small canyons and ridges. Cooler air was coming down the canyons and in just a hundred feet or so I could easily feel the temperature change on my skin. This was repeated as I crossed each canyon. BTW, thanks for the introduction to the instant weather site. The photo was taken in Death Valley National Park. Birdman
