My wife and I hiked Telescope Peak on July 5. So, I can give you a recent road report. Any vehicle is good to the charcoal kilns. Just watch out for the potholes. After that, the road is covered with fist sized rocks until you get past Thorndike Campground. There is a very rough section just after Thorndike. Then the road gets smooth into Mahogany Flat. I drove my mini-van as far as Thorndike and decided not to go any further. There was a Saturn and a Taurus parked at Mahogany.
Driving up in a passenger vehicle can be done if you go very slow in low gear. The big issue will be tires. When we got back, I noticed a pull to the right when driving and thought that my front end needed alignment. It turns out that one tire had been gouged part way through the tread. I probably drove over a sharp rock that was wedged into place.
Hope this helps. Good luck!
