A Navy training excersise involving the Weapons Test Squadron VX-31 in the Kennedy Meadows area, caused a fire that could been seen clearly in the valley Monday afternoon.

The fire had consummed nearly 20 acres as of 2 p.m. and was reported to be two miles northeast of the Chimney Peak Ranger Station. According to KLOA/KRAJ news, two crews, two tankers and four engines were battling the blaze.

According to Public Information Officer Doris Lance of NAWS, China Lake, the fire began as a result of a helocopter search and rescue training excersise that involved the testing of smoke in the area. The SAR team was attempting a wind test in the area with a flare, when the flare accidently ignited the brush.
