Sounds like a Conenose, or "Kissing Bug," although they get bigger than ticks. (Bed bugs are about tick-sized.) Conenose are generally found in the southwest; some species carry a nasty disease. I've never had the joy of experiencing one of these personally, but I've found something very similar looking in my backyard.

On a related note, I'm trying to put together a list of all the little critters out there that bite us. Here's what I've got so far:

bees, wasps, mosquitos, black widows, brown recluse, bedbugs, twips, fleas, headlice, chiggars, conenose (Kissing Bug), centipedes, ticks, toe-biters, lady bugs, leeches, scorpions.... Yikes! This list is getting way too long.
