When I visit a part of the desert I'm not familiar with, I prefer to have printed 7.5min USGS topos of the areas we might be in. I've download all of the DRGs for this area and print them on 11x17 paper. Each map is folded in half, slipped into a 3-hole sheet protector and added to a 3-ring binder which I carry in the Jeep. This keeps them safe, but easy to access. If needed, I use a GPS to locate myself on the maps (and carry a compass for backup). The Tom Harrison Death Valley map is also worth having.
