If you are into desert packpacking, Bighorn Gorge on the east side of the Cottonwoods is awesome! It is accessed by walking across the fan west of Mesquite Springs Campground (you can usually park there for free). The walk is several hours up the fan to the mouth of the canyon. About 2-3 miles in, the canyon narrows to a slot, and the walls reveal an amazing mosaic of polished fossils as wide and high as you can see. (Note: Fossil collectors need not get excited here; the fossils are hardened into solid marble, not just lying around.) Maybe 10 or so folks get there a year.

Of course, this takes significant planning and backcountry skills - it's NOT for a beginner. There is a route from the west side down into the canyon, but I don't know much about it. Good luck,
Guac
