The area, Mexican Springs that you would have to traverse over to get from Cerro Gordo to the salt tramway is exactly what you do NOT want to be driving unless you have a vehicle with lockers and are traveling with someone else. Mexican Springs is still considered part of the Swansea Grade, by the way. There is no way to get to the salt tram in a vehicle without doing the Swansea Grade. Even if you were to hit the tram from Swansea at Owens Dry Lake, summer storms have made the area tougher than it normally is and you would still need lockers and another vehicle with you in case you had problems.
Also, if you plan to tour Cerro Gordo, you should call caretakers, John & Roxie and let them know you are coming. Their # is 760-876-1860. They can also advise you of current weather and road conditions, both of which can change instantly this time of year.
