You can stay in the bunkhouse or the Belshaw House, but you have to bring your own food and cook it there. There's running water, electricity, and propane heat, as well as cast iron heating stoves. The bunkhouse runs on generator, but has propane heat that keeps things toasty, and although it has a full kitchen, there is no bathroom, and you can't always depend on the water running because the pipes often freeze. The Belshaw has a bathroom with shower, and usually no problems with freezing pipes. No place to shop up there, nothing to buy except a book about the history of Cerro Gordo and one I wrote about one of the cats up there who saw a ghost.
Except for those luxuries I mentioned, you are in a remote area, truly in a ghost town, about 8 miles from the nearest paved road and I believe it's another 10 to the nearest town of Lone Pine. You may be the only person up there other than John and Roxie, their dog, and a half a dozen cats. It's a great experience, I prefer it to a regular motel in Lone Pine, and stay up there by myself, two weeks last year, and one week this year, and another few weeks with my husband throughout the year. But it's not like any motel, or bed and breakfast, and it's not like camping either. You need to call John & Roxie about prices and availability. Phone # 760-876-1860.
