I also practice putting my truck into 4x4 as soon as I get off road, even if on a bladed dirt road (don't need 4x4 in this respect, but keeps things loose and lubed up front).

However, in my full sized 4x4 trucks did this help to control washboard jitters. The theory is sound - the extra weight of the engine over the front drive wheels keep the wheels planted to the ground, thus pulls the vehicle straight (in 2x4 the unsprung rear wheels spend more time in the air than on the ground, thus creating the jittery ride and traction). However, when I went to small trucks (my former '96 Chevrolet S-10 4x4 pickup and my current 2002 Toyota Tacoma TRD 4x4), I don't feel any appreciable difference.
