Steve is right, it takes most of the day to do the Swansea Grade, particularly if you do the traditional stops to look at the Burgess Mine, and the Swansea Salt tram.
The Swansea Grade usually is impassable in the winter in the higher elevations because of the snows. Late summer and fall storms caused some damage to a couple of the spots along the grade that were already tough. Last report I heard was by David A. Wright, so you might contact through his website http://gbr.death-valley.us/. Vehicles with lockers were recommended just because of those few tough spots, if I remember right.
