I agree with you. Those old military surplus Jeeps and CJs were superb exploration vehicles. And if you did become stuck, they were easy to extract. If they broke, they were easy to fix. I cringe to think what would happen on my Tacoma with a standard Hi Lift jack propping it up - all that plastic facia and all. Hi Lifts worked just fine on my old '70 Ford F250 4x4. Sometimes I yearn for the simplicity of the old stuff.
The ludicrous contraptions I often see - hyper modified - with some of those monsters I really suspect if they ever see the shoulder of the road, let alone some serious 4x4 action. If some of those jacked up beasts did see action, I could just imagine some of the butt suction on the seat cushion with some mild off camber noodling along the Inyo Range crest between Burgess and Cerro Gordo.
