I wonder if that was the guy I used to know, Dugan Hansen. He worked here at China Lake as a welder, and when I knew him about 15 years ago he must have been in his sixties.....then he retired. He lived at Indian Ranch.
He told me some interesting stories, he was born and raised in Darwin before they closed off the land for the base. He said he used to wander all over the land out here, and he knew where there was still gold mines that had never been worked. Last I heard was his obit in the local paper, which said he was the last of his tribe. I believe it was Timbisha....
He also told me a story about a guy who was working with a buldozer at Keeler. He had a truck and his buldozer there, and was working alone. When he finished, he figured he could start the dozer off across Owens Lake, then drive around and catch it. Well, he did so, but the dozer never showed up.... so somewhere out there in the mud is a buried buldozer!
