DEAR FRIENDS-- WE HAVE OUR NEXT BLM VOLUNTEER EVENT SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY 31 JANUARY 2004. THIS WORK PARTY WILL INCLUDE SEVERAL BLM VOLUNTEERS FROM AROUND THE STATE. FAMILIES ARE CORDIALLY INVITED.

THE RUTH MINE IS NORTH OF TRONA IN THE ARGUS MOUNTAIN RANGE. THE PRECISE DIRECTIONS ARE 8.2 MILES NORTH OF THE TRONA HIGH SCHOOL PROCEEDING ON THE PANAMINT VALLEY HIGHWAY TO THE HOMEWOOD CANYON ROAD. TURN LEFT AN HOMEWOOD CANYON ROAD FOR 5 MILES AND THE RUTH MINE IS THE AREA SLIGHTLY ELEVATED ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE ROAD IS EXCELLENT BLACK TOP ALL THE WAY TO THE MINE.

THE FAMILY OF MR. STEVE AUSTIN HAVE DECIDED TO TURN THIS MINING CLAIM OVER TO THE BLM THROUGH A PROCESS OF A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING UNDER THE ADOPT A CABIN PROGRAM. MR. AUSTIN AND FAMILY MEMBERS WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THIS DAY TO ANSWER QUESTIONS AND PROVIDE INFORMATION, THE HISTORY OF THEIR FAMILIES INVOLVEMENT IN THE MINE. ALSO MR. JOEL BRIGGS OUR BLM VOLUNTEER HISTORIAN WILL PROVIDE INFORMATION TO ALL WHO SHOW UP AT THE WORK PARTY. I SINCERELY HOPE THIS EVENT WILL SIMULATE SOME INTEREST IN MANY OF THE YOUNG STUDENTS WHO ATTEND TO SUBMIT TERM PAPERS FOR ONE OF THEIR CLASS PROJECTS. WE WILL HAVE SEVERAL BLM EMPLOYEES ON SITE TO ANSWER QUESTIONS INCLUDING AN ARCHAEOLOGIST FROM OUR LOCAL BLM FIELD OFFICE.

OUR OBJECTIVE ON SATURDAY WILL BE TO CONDUCT WORK ON THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE, THE BUNKHOUSE, AND THE SALOON. ALSO GENERAL AREA CLEAN UP WILL BE PART OF THE DAYS EVENTS. OUR RIDGECREST VOLUNTEERS ARE ASSIGNED TO WORK ON THE SCHOOLHOUSE. OUR GOOD FRIENDS FROM THE LOS ANGELES AREA WILL WORK ON THE BUNKHOUSE AND SALOON. THE GOAL IS TO RESTORE THESE OLD BUILDINGS WITH SIMULATED AND ACTUAL ARTIFACTS TO LOOK LIKE THE ERA OF THE 1920'S-1940'S. THE WORK WE PERFORM WILL NOT BE DANGEROUS OR COMPLICATED. ALL THE SUPPLIES WILL BE PROVIDED FOR THE WORK PARTY. THE BUILDINGS ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. I AM ASKING THAT PARTICIPANTS PROVIDE SOME BASICS TOOLS LIKE A RAKE, HAMMER, AND OTHER MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. I HAVE BEEN AMAZED ON PREVIOUS WORK PARTIES AT HOW MUCH WORK CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED IN THREE HOURS.

THE RIDGECREST VOLUNTEERS WILL MEET AT THE RICHMOND GATE PARK AND RIDE AT 0845 AND DEPART IN CARAVAN AT 0900 (9AM). I ESTIMATE THE DRIVE TO THE MINE AT ABOUT 40 MINUTES FROM RIDGECREST.

AT 1230 WE WILL HAVE A FREE CATERED LUNCH FOR ALL THE VOLUNTEERS. HENRY AND GAIL WILL BE THE "CAMP COOKS". ALSO FRED HAS AGREED TO DONATE HIS SERVICES AS OUR DJ. AMAZINGLY WE WILL HAVE LIVE MUSIC DURING THE WORK PARTY. AFTER LUNCH WE PLAN TO ORGANIZE SOME DANCING, HIKING AND TOURS OF THE MINING OPERATIONS. OTHERS WILL RETURN TO WORK AND SOME WILL RETURN HOME.

WE ARE OPTIMISTIC THAT THIS WILL BE AN ENJOYABLE, INFORMATIVE, AND FUN WORK PARTY. PLEASE E MAIL ME AN ESTIMATE AS TO HOW MANY ADULTS AND CHILDREN WILL PARTICIPATE BY COB 23 JANUARY 2004. THANKS AND SEE YOU SOON.

GEORGE BALAND
RIDGECREST, CALIFORNIA
