I did the hike a couple of years ago and it was awesome!. On the hike up take a small folding saw. Part of the trail is overgrown, especially around the last spring (Brewery Spring-I think)and sawing off a few branches will save you time/trouble slithering through the mud under low hanging branches. Just before you get to the well furnished cabin, near the smoke stack, there is a canyon (Sourdough) that cuts to your left (North) going up hill. I heard a cabin up that canyon has running water but no bar service! The hike up was moderate to strenuous as we did the hike in late Oct with crappy weather and thus took winter type gear and clothing. There is LOTS of stuff to see and do, so give yourself plenty of time.
Most of all, plan on hiking out and staying one night at Panamint Springs Resort. The sunset view off the veranda is Stellar! and the micro-brews are cold and tasty, and the food is excellent with huge portions. Don't forget to say hi to Jerry.
