In all my reading of the literature of the history of Death Valley, I have found only one reference to anything that suggests that there was a cache of artifacts on or near Pinto Peak where Jerry found the trunk. That reference is in the book "Death Valley in 1849 - The Luck of the Gold Rush Emigrants" written by John Southworth and published in 1978. On page 102 he states: "A cache of much too heavy and totally useless gold coin along with a pistol or two was abandoned on the mountain summit but its recovery remains unreported." Unfortunately, Southworth does not cite any reference for this comment (he does not provide any footnotes or citations in this book.) Perhaps a clue to the mystery might lie in the source material that led to this report of a cache. Does anyone know where this reference came from? Is it in some other book or the Jayhawker papers or somewhere else?
