The tower in the Nelson Range is just a microwave repeater affiliated with the base station they plan to build in Saline Valley near McElvoy Canyon(?). A "Finding of No Significant Impact" (FONSI) for the proposed site radar and microwave tower site was determined. A FONSI for the 2 backup microwave tower sites and the 4 backup radar sites was also determined. Right now the AF has their choice of where they want their goods. Here are the sites that they proposed:

Microwave Repeater Site Options:

  • Lead Canyon South—This site is on NPS land and is immediately adjacent to Saline Valley Road and designated BLM wilderness.

  • Lead Canyon North—This site is on NPS land and is immediately adjacent to designated NPS wilderness.
  • Galena Ridge—This site is located on nonwilderness NPS land within the cherry-stemmed area adjacent to a mining road leading to the Santa Rosa Mine and immediately bordering designated NPS wilderness.

Beacon Radar Alternatives:

  • Alternative A (Central Saline)—This site is located north of the Salt Lake on NPS land and is immediately adjacent to designated NPS wilderness.

  • Alternative B (McElvoy Canyon)—This site is located on BLM land immediately west of Saline Valley Road, on an alluvial fan at the mouth of the McElvoy Canyon.

  • Alternative C (Grey Eagle Mine)—This site is located on BLM land west of Saline Valley Road.
  • Alternative D (Keyes Canyon)—This site is located on BLM land west of Saline Valley Road and east of Pat Keyes Canyon, approximately one-quarter mile northeast of Badwater Springs.

  • Alternative E (Keyes Canyon North)—This site is located on BLM land west of Saline Valley Road and east of Pat Keyes Canyon, approximately one mile north of Badwater Springs.

The radar structure the AF wants to build is a 27 foot tall Radome Beacon Radar Antenna that will look something like this:

And there is the jest of that 25MB, 247 page report! Not worth the reading really, unless you are really into the project. If you email Gary at the addy listed in the article, he can send you a CD or a hard copy of the report.
