Since you will be staying for 2 days you will need overnight accommodations. I doubt you will be hauling a bunch of camping gear to LV. You can pay top price and stay at a nice resort in Furnace Creek, of if you are more budget minded you can get a room in Beatty, NV for $45.

If you plan to visit any area off of the paved highway, you should plan on renting an SUV. You will need to check with the rental car agency to be sure you are allowed to take the vehicle off the paved road. An SUV will provide better ground clearance on some of the bumpy dirt roads and perhaps provide a better ride. Likely you will not need 4WD to many of the popular destinations unless there has been a recent storm.

If you have never been, Titus Canyon is a very scenic drive when it is open. Besides the spectacular scenery, there is old mine sites to explore, the history behind the town of Leadville and exploring the remaining ruins, petroglyphs, and driving through the canyon walls at the end of the trail is a thrill.

In two days you will only be able to whet your appetite for more. Death Valley has a way of drawing you back again and again.
