Weather can change instantly at Cerro Gordo any time of year. You need to monitor weather conditions the week before you go. The last two April's we had late snows up there.

To find out about touring the town for a day visit or to arrange an overnight stay, call caretakers John and Roxie Bowden at 760-876-1860. They can also help you with current road and weather conditions for Cerro Gordo and surrounding areas. If you want to arrange a visit, especially an over night one, best to call ahead now and find out what the town schedule is. If you just want to know weather and road conditions, call a week before you go. Even then you need to be prepared for anything, up there.

For info on visiting the town, some history, and my experiences with Cerro Gordo go to the old archives of my website. If you look under Cerro Gordo Mines you will specifically find info about arranging a visit to the town. http://explorehistoricalif.tripod.com/archive.html

Cerro Gordo boomed in the mid 1860's through 1870's when silver was mined there. In the early 1900's the town revived again, when they mined zinc. For some history regarding the zinc area, go to: http://explorehistoricalif.com/cerro_mining.htm
