I was a stick shift die-hard for years until my Cruiser was in the shop for an engine transplant and I took my first auto trans Suburban to DV, hitting some significant trails.

Absolutely agree that an auto, with the proper gear selections, is the best route. And there seems to be more and more aftermarket shift kits and off road kits for them all the time.

Pulling trailers and steep down hill control are no longer a problem with the multi speed modern autos made for such work. Also, as mentioned by others, autos make for a much easier trail ride through the rough spots where one can ease over the obstacles without the stalling problem.
