I believe this is the one you are inquiring about. It's located at the Itzalla Mine near the top of Telescope Peak, just past the National Jackalope Preserve. The owner, Helmut Loudenyeller uses it to communicate with a similar unit atop the store at Panamint Springs. After he passes his message he then sticks the mouthpiece into his ear to hear the response from Panamint Springs which is a remarkable 22 miles away. This system has performed flawlessly since 1948 and is certainly one of the most fascinating communication devices to be seen in our desert.
