Ed, for long extended trips I use a Yakima LoadWarrior rack. It's got 250 lb capacity which is fine for the Expedition. I put all the soft bulky stuff up top-sleeping bags, pads, day packs, and gear bags. The rack works great, its made out of bomber proof tubular rails. The Yakima bungy net has hooks that "lock" on the rails. Extremely sturdy. The only draw back is hooing up the net by yourself. That can be a cast iron bitch, like a one armed paper hanger, like a monkey humping a basketball...you get the picture.
Honestly, it's really not that bad and with someone helping it's a piece of cake.
