I've seen and enountered people the type you've described in and around DV. Generally they're harmless, but some can be rude. And some might be dangerous if you get too close. If the man you came upon is a loner, he may have felt as uncomfortable around you as you were by him.

Since you later found him laying on the table, he may have determined you as harmless and become more at ease. Or he might be hanging aorund in case you found something doesn't want you to find. By then, though, you felt uncomfortable and left. Leaving is often the best thing to do.

I've had the creeps in the past by encounters in the back country. I have had success by staying pleasant, don't invade their space, and bidding them goodbye as soon as possible. Then go over the next hill and beyond.

I've seen a man a year ago near Crankshaft Crossing (extreme northern end of the valley) similar to the one you describe. Drove a battered old '70s Datsun pickup with camper shell. The cab was so full of junk it was crowding the driver. Driver appeared to be an aging hippie.
