Sorry for the 3x rerun for long time readers...Mike, I would not bank on any cell phone working anywhere in the backcountry. My wife likes to switch cell phone carriers every 3 months when she gets some discount coupon. They all work differently depending on a number of factors.I have called Los angeles with a toll free local signal from the Butte valley rock cabin while laying flat on the concrete floor. 2 hours later, from the top of the striped Butte, no signal at all.verizon used to work great, but totally sucks now. Last January, V-10 sprockett had the only working cell phone out of a half dozen. We had the same carrier but his disco gold colored lithium compact phone was the only one that would work. With ATT and their super wazoo new system, I had the only dead phone signal on top of Mt.Whitney on June 6th, but in july it worked fine. The Nextel system did not work from Bridgeport on Sept 12-14, and I loaned my phone(Sprint) to all the folks with no phone, and got a no roaming signal, most likely from Sparks NV. For best results, forget about the phone... in fact, forget about life for awhile, and you will better enjoy your trip. Who really enjoys phoning home? Is it the wonderful news? "I got a street sweeping ticket" "I hit a pole and backed over your Harley"? Or "daddy, when are you coming home...mommy has firemen over when you are gone in your big ford"? leave the phone!
