I don't recommend taking any rental vehicle on the dirt roads in Death Valley. I tell every visitor I contact that they need to look closely at the rental agreement. Most state that they will not help the renter if they are off a paved surface. We can't tow you and the tow companies charge lots o'$$$$ to come fetch you if your vehicle fails. Mostly it is the tires that fail. Passenger car tires are not adequate for the back country. I also recommend that the visitor should have water, food and shelter in case they do have problems. I tell em like it is, most ignore my advice but when they do have problems the overtime is kinda nice. Most people who visit Parks are not prepared for extended emergency situations. Just my 2 pesos on the subject
