There has been much talk on this boad recently about the right vehicle for the DVNP back country. One of the dumbest things I did was buy a new Jeep Cherokee in '98, thinking that 4WD was more important than reliability. What's really important is high clearance, reliability, and sane, careful driving. My last trip in the Jeep (with 37,000 miles only) put me in Grants, NM with a smoking transmission and in Cottonwood, AZ for a rebuild on the front and rear differential. Very expensive, and out of warranty. Glad I didn't drive to DVNP on that trip. After the rear differential rebuild, I traded it in for a new Toyota; what else is there when you want a reliable vehicle for safe travel.
