At first I was puzzled by your comments about the "path" heading west from the road near Badwater. Then I realized that you were there in the summer and you probably did not see any tourists walking out on the path to experience the salt flats of Death Valley. In the fall, winter, and spring many tourist go out on the path---and then return. It goes a relatively short distance into the flats.
A hike across the salt flats in the summer would not be wise, but if you are determined to attempt the trek I suggest you equip yourself with a transmitting GPS so your summer journey can be tracked and the world of science can determine how far pluck and daring can get an individual before Death Valley extracts its toll. This would add a small bit to scientific knowledge and you would get your name listed in later editions of books that name Death Valley victims.
Of course you could invest in Mr. Newman's Solar Armor and stroll across the flats in the middle of August without so much as a bead of perspiration. But, I suspect, this would not be considered sporting by you, and besides, Solar Armor does not come cheap.
