It was definitely in better shape last year--there were lots of rat droppings (not to mention a giant rat on top of the cupboards) and the chairs were mostly broken. We hiked up from the Panamint Valley side b/c we had a rental jeep with rental-quality tires, and got a late start, so we only spent about a half-hour there. A group of guys with 4x4s passed us on the way up (one blew a tire about 100 yards into Goler Wash), but there was no sign of them when we got to Barker. They were planning on hanging out at the ranch, but I suspect they may have moved on to the cabins in Butte Valley when they saw the poor conditions.
