That is all that remains of the old Wildrose Station motel and restaurant, a popular hangout for the old Death Valley prospectors and miners such as Shorty Harris, Pete Aguerberry and Seldom Seen Slim. In the 1960's the Park Service used eminent domain to force out the owners Mr. & Mrs. Samples. NPS then bulldozed down the buildings as being an "eyesore" but in actuality they just didn't want to have to maintain the road any more. NPS has several times since then tried to close the road to the public claiming maintenance costs are too high but public clamor has forced them to keep it open.

I had last met the Samples in the early 1990's and at that time they were living in Ridgecrest.
