Will help you identify some of the stuff you find out there & shows you how they were used. I got my copies at Bodie, but you should be able to get them through Amazon.com

Also some personal accounts that might help you:

Western Mining: An informal account of precious-metals prospecting, palcering, lode mining, and milling on the American frontier from
Spanish Times to 1893
by Otis E. Young, Jr.
University of Oklahoma Press

Hardrock Gold: A Miner's Tale
by Tom Morrison
University of Oklahoma Press

California Gold and the Highgraders:True Stories of the Mines and the Miners
Ed Calhoun
Cal-Con Press

And there's a few more I can't locate on mybookshelves right now. If I think of them, I'll post them for you. You might also check my website and my old archives for November or December , I believe. I have a story of Highgrading, and a complete bibliography of the books I used in my research.

Bodie "The Mines are Looking Well..."
by Michael H. Piatt
North Bay Books

is obviously about mining in Bodie - but will give you a good idea of how they knew what to look for, machinery, etc.
