The BLM says that they are involved in an ongoing effort to preserve and one day restore the tunnel site. If that is true, where were they when the site was abandoned and being ransacked? And, how do they propose to restore the site after everything is gone? This sounds like the story of the farmer who put a bunch of locks on the barn door after the horse was gone. The BLM sees the site as a blight on the land (their land), and would prefer to clear everything away and erect a sign that says "Former site of Burro Schmidt Camp", just like they did on Colorado and Gerbracht Camps, and are presently doing to the White Swan site. Ask Swanlady if what the BLM is stating is correct, she will give you the truth. The BLM says there is an immediate need to preserve the site--that is the biggest line of crap I have ever heard! A fence around the site will do just about as much good as the yellow tape put up around the site recently.
Yes, the buildings are still there, but nothing of historical value remains, and the BLM volunteers are helping the BLM get their way. The sad thing is that the volunteers really feel that they are doing something good for the site and its preservation. All they are really doing is the dirty work for the BLM. Paul
