There are so many bands on ham radio that I can see his statement as being true. Due to the lay of the land, you'd just about have to have a repeter sitting up aroud Heaps Peak or there about to talk Barstow to Berdoo. I have talked Riverside to V'ville on simplex, but that unusuall. As the freqs go up, it's easier to reach out further and further with out a repeter. Sure technology has inproved in 40 years so more is possible today. IHO, your Ham friend spoke the truth in the 60's.
