At the time of the Darwin French trip into the Death Valley area how much of the story of the Forty-niners in Death Valley was known? Would it have been of interest to the likes of French and James Hitchens and other members of the party? How extensive is information on the Darwin French trip of 1860? The J B Rood inscription is very near the J Hitchens name and date and I would think it very likely that members of the French group would have seen Rood’s inscription. If there is extensive documentation of the French trip and no mention is made of Rood’s inscription I should think that is significant.
