Shortly after your New Year's 2001 visit that region got repeatedly slammed with lots of snow. Both South and North Passes were impassable for several weeks, making the Lippencott Road the only route in or out of Saline Valley, and Steel Pass was also impassable for two or three months. There was a time when Park Service recommended 4WD, High Clearance AND chains for the upper Lippencott!

Although last year was unusually snowy, both North & South Passes are impassable for at least a few days once or twice every winter.
