Modoc is also known as Lookout. It is on Lookout Mountain, a small ridge jutting out from the Panamint Range, overlooking Panamint Valley. Modoc was the name of the largest mine. The connection with the charcoal camp Birdman was referring to is that the charcoal kilns in Wildrose Canyon were built expressly for the smelter that served the Modoc and other mines. Nadeu's "Shotgun" road, the dirt road obviously heading due north from the Slate Range summit on the Trona-Wildrose Road, served Lookout the town, Modoc and Murietta mines. There are many stone ruins from Lookout's heyday, as well as newer ruins from periodic attempts to work old mines.
