Don't laugh about this, Arkose. The importance of permian dioxide in the history of the west is generally and sadly overlooked. Once upon a time, permian dioxide was mined in vast quantities from the dunes and lakebeds throughout the Death Valley/Panamint/Mojave region. The raw material was shipped great distances where it was used to manufacture Permian Cheese in one of the many permian cheese mills that sprang up in boom towns during the mid to late 1800's (click the link to view an image; the Permian Cheese Works in Tombstone AZ. appears in the foreground).

Permian cheese, as you know, was a staple in the diet of many of the immigrant workers who helped to forge inroads into the new west by the sweat of their brow. We owe a tremendous debt to those who toiled and braved fierce and sweeping permian dioxide fires (and other lesser known sand hazards) to provide the rich and abundant supply of permian cheese that built the west. Were it not for the mining of these rich and accessable permian dioxide deposits, we would not have much of the colorful heritage that we celebrate today.

Man, if this doesn't get me a red shirt, I don't know what will! ;-)
