I was planning our annual camping trip to Monache Meadows and the Sherman Pass Jeep Trail in two weeks. My husband called the Sequoia National Forest yesterday and finally got some answers on the McNally Fire. As of yesterday it was still only 35 % contained. It has burned from Johnsondale, to the Sherman Pass Jeep Trail. The jeep trail is history - it has burned and they had to bring bulldozers in on the road. The Trail of a Hundred Giants has been saved so far, and I was happy to hear that they had just managed to save the shepherds cabin at Bonita Meadows. Monache Meadows is safe so far, but who knows how things will go. Everything up there is closed however.
I can imagine how bad the smoke has gotten in the Owens Valley - we were headed to Cerro Gordo via the Swansea Grade when it started and suddenly saw all the smoke. We had a good idea then where the fire was, and where it could head if it got bad enough. That Monday when we left, Lone Pine was thick in smoke.
